8 Team Single Elimination Bracket: Simple Setup Guide

An 8 team single elimination bracket is the simplest knockout format for a small tournament. Eight teams start, and each loss eliminates a team until one champion remains. If you need a quick way to organize matches, this bracket gives you a clear path from the opening round to the final without extra games or complicated rules.

Bracket Structure

The structure is straightforward: 8 teams enter the bracket, 4 first-round matches are played, 2 winners advance to the semifinals, and then the 2 semifinal winners meet in the final. That means there are only three rounds total. Each game matters because there is no second chance after a loss. For a basic bracket, you only need to place the teams once and follow the winners forward one round at a time.

Seeding Basics

To fill the bracket correctly, place teams according to seed if you have rankings. In a standard setup, the highest seed usually plays the lowest seed in the opening round: 1 vs 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. This keeps stronger teams separated early and creates a balanced bracket. If you do not have seeding, you can assign team names randomly, but the bracket still follows the same round structure.

After each first-round match, write the winner into the next open spot in the semifinal round. The same process continues after the semifinals, with both winners advancing to the final. You do not need to change the bracket layout; you only update the team names or scores in each advancing slot. If you want the easiest setup possible, keep the bracket visible, label each matchup clearly, and move winners forward immediately after each game.
